The Crow's Nest - September 29, 2017

Long before I get to the Security Line I can see the wheels a’turning in the heads of the TSA.  “Hey, hey, hey, here she comes” is playing loudly between their ears.  Their most dangerous passenger is heading into the line.  She is arriving armed with a collapsible cane and sort of spikey hair.  I have never figured out how a white bread-mashed potato Norwegian like me can be such a threat going through security.  But, it happened again both going to and coming from Las Vegas.  I ALWAYS get taken aside or into a room, get the more than thorough pat down and try to figure out why.  They know I have missing and extra body parts and couldn’t do too much damage as I have no strength.  Poor Chuck always has to wait on the side-lines until I’ve been thoroughly searched.  I wouldn’t complain if it happened occasionally, but this is an every time occurrence when I fly.  O well, guess I’ll have to live with being notorious from here to Singapore (within the flying community).

Autumn seems to have come so fast.  I guess it does every fall.  One day it is really hot outside, the next day leaves are falling off the trees.  This year we have had a huge infestation of wasps.  They just seem to be everywhere.  For a few days they were coming into the house through a small crack in our fireplace.  We were swinging at them constantly to keep them at bay until Chuck found the little hole and patched it.  Now it is the ladybugs who have taken over.  At least they are not quite as threatening!

Grain harvest is over but beans and potatoes are now being taken off the fields.  Beet harvest is also about to start so there will be lots of trucks and farm equipment everywhere.  As much as I dread what is coming after the harvest, there is something so special about all the activity that surrounds this time of year.

Once again Trinity Lutheran Church had a great Fall Turkey Supper.  This is a collective effort of many, many people to make this a success.  We usually serve between 400 – 500 people (which includes take-out orders).  My goodness, we get diners from all over this northeast area of North Dakota.  It is a fun, fun event with lots of work to pull it off.  Unfortunately, our numbers are dwindling and we are all getting older.  I can’t imagine how that should be a problem?!?
Anyway, I for one enjoyed working again with such great people, but I am SO glad it is over with for another year.

It was so much fun to be a part of LeRoy and Louise Pederson’s “Thank You” party for the Edinburg community a couple of weeks ago.  LeRoy and Louise have moved to Grand Forks and LeRoy has retired from barbering.  Lots of people came to wish them well as they transition into a new phase of life.  Even their former exchange student from Denmark, Per Worm and family came to celebrate the day.  LeRoy and Louise are a very special couple.  I know we will see them quite often as Grand Forks is just a hop, skip and a jump from Edinburg.

Fall clean-up is underway in many households.  The leaves are changing colors and the gardens have quit producing.  Cooler weather is now part of our life also.  But, we have NOT had a freeze yet and it is September 29th!  Rain is forecast, but no “dipping -below” temperatures are predicted just yet.  I guess we can say this has been a beautiful fall.  The leaves in the coulees are an array of fall colors.  The landscape is so pretty everywhere you look.  One  good wind though, and poof! the leaves disappear.

I mentioned at the beginning that we had traveled to Las Vegas.  It was such a fun trip.  We went with daughter Kris and her husband Jason.  Kris and I went to see Donny & Marie Osmund at the Flamingo.  What a show they put on!  Their energy level was phenomenal.  Of course, the place was filled with pretty much old people.  Kris was probably one of the youngest there.  It really was one great performance by the two of them plus their dancers and back-up singers.  Chuck and Kris also to a helicopter sight-seeing flight over the Grand Canyon.  They both said that was awesome.

I just heard James Haug is moving into the Good Samaritan Center in Park River.  I know Doris will be down often to be with him.

Thank you, cousin Brian, out in California for being a faithful reader.  Have a great day and we will talk later.

BURMA SHAVE SIGNS

1. Don't stick your elbow out so far, it may go home in another car.

2. Around the curve lickety-split. Beautiful car wasn't it?

3. No matter the price, no matter how new, the best safety device in the car is you!

4. Car in the ditch, driver in the tree. The moon was full and so was he.

5.Passing school zone, take it slow. Let our little shavers grow.

Chuck really enjoyed sitting beside the helicopter pilot flying over the Grand Canyon. Brings back memories when he flew for the military.

This peacock in the conservatory at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas is comprised completely of roses. It is beautiful.
